Ancient DOS Games --- Episode 71

Star Wars: X-Wing

Additional Information and Corrections:

  • Thanks to a VOGONS forum member, I learned that the 1994 CD-ROM version of X-Wing does NOT support speed matching or SVGA graphics, even though Tie Fighter does. Seems kinda lame that way but whatever. :P

  • Yeah, I accidentally said "your weapons" instead of "their weapons" near the end. Didn't catch that until editing. >_>;

  • Thankfully, before I got to editing, I noticed that I completely messed up the DOSBox settings, so I had to re-record that part on the fly which is why it sounds somewhat different from the rest of the audio.

  • Just like in the movies, you can switch your shields to full front, full rear, or balanced, You can also rebalance the shields if one side is weak and the other isn't by simply cycling through these settings back to the balanced mode. It's usually best to keep the shields balanced though because they can be recharged to a higher overall level this way, whereas if you leave them full front or rear, they only recharge those sides and ignore the other.

  • One major tip I forgot to give is to NEVER collide with anything. Collisions in this game are pretty much a death sentence so no matter what you do, avoid running into anything... or you can just turn collisions off if you don't mind cheating a bit.
